VIVĀH
An ongoing project “विवह्” (Vivāh) is derived from the Sanskrit word for “marriage.” A traditional Indian rite symbolizing the union and togetherness of women and men.
The project is an exploration of the lived experiences and emotional landscapes of individuals navigating their personal marital journeys. The work captures series of diverse marriages across cultures, ages and those who have experienced divorce. It highlights love and the journey of growing gracefully, and mindfully. Through a collaborative approach sitters present themselves in their own environment without stylization.
“Vivāh” visually expresses the deep affection and bond shared by partners as they navigate life together. It shows the beauty of their unique paths, emphasizing the individuality of each marriage while celebrating the universal theme of love, companionship and mutual growth.
RAMAYA & SUPREETH
Ramaya was never a believer of arranged marriages but, was proved wrong. I stumbled upon Supreeth’s profile on a matrimonial website, and we exchanged pleasantries which turned into dates, engagement and a quick wedding all within two months.
Our journey has been a roller coaster from having issues with adjusting to a new family, having an unplanned baby, and moving to a new country. But without Supreeth’s support our marriage would have failed. From being my pillar of strength to a shoulder to cry on. He plays the role of an all-rounder partner. Now our small family is close knit, and we enjoy life as it comes. We believe in the philosophy of “never give up”.
Eini & Max
We met online during Covid. Our romance bloomed over the winter during which I would write poems for Eini, we went on long walks together in freezing weather. We found deep love for one another.
ANNA & MAX
Our story began 10 years ago on the internet, a connection that crossed the border between Ukraine and Russia. Despite the distance and the inflaming conflict between our countries, our bond grew stronger each day, and after two and half years, we decided to unite our paths in Ukraine.
Life took a dramatic turn when the full-scale Russian invasion forced us to leave our home. Five years after our life together in Odesa, we relocated to the UK, seeking safety and new beginnings amidst the chaos.
Our journey has been a testament to the power of love and resilience. Being disabled, finding true love felt like a distant dream, but we have been real soulmates, supported unconditionally by our amazing families.
OLENA & VIACHESLAV
In 1993 we fell in love at first sight and quickly decided to live together. Our life changed when our only daughter, Anna, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Doctors said she would only live until she was three years old. We didn't give up hope and kept believing in her.
Our marriage has always been about commitment and support that can forge happiness. It has brought us joy even when times were tough. Over 30 years, Anna grew up to be a talented artist and found her own love despite her disability. It's wonderful that we can share our love and support with their family too. Now, it feels like our two families share one big love.
ANGELA & CHAO
“We have known each other since our teen ages. We were classmates in the high school, but not been close during the high school and university days. Perhaps over time we grew ourselves in our own way, and when our lives crossed again, we suddenly became best friends and now life partners. When we are together, we talk and laugh all the time.”
HASANGEET & HARDEEP
In 2018, my family had put me in a situation where I had to make a tough choice between them and my childhood love. They disapproved of our marriage due to cast difference, and I still chose him, despite the potential of losing her family.
We still remember playing together and holding hands as kids, never imagining that one day we would hold each other’s hand forever against all odds.
After we married, my parents' love for us won over the anger and social norms. Although we are still at opposite poles, we cherish living each day together
SHUBHAM
I found myself standing at the altar, where I embarked on the journey of marriage. As my young age and the pressure of adulthood took its toll, we unable to navigate the complexities of married life and found ourselves drifting apart.
SANGEETA & CHANDU
The journey began as a long-distance relationship; I was in the UK and Sangeeta was in India. Over time our bond and love deepened, leading to marriage.
Our happiness was tempered as Sangeeta had health issues and was grieving on the loss of her father. The desire to expand the family, through multiple setbacks, eventually saw the arrival of Ishika.
PAUL & JANET
Music has been the backdrop to our story. It’s the soundtrack to our dances, laughter, it’s what we found solace in. I miss sharing all moments with you. I promise a future where you and I create our very own sanctuary.
